Imperialism
Imperialism is both a policy or practice by which a country increases its power by gaining control over other areas of the world, and the effect that a powerful country or group of countries has in changing or influencing the way people live in other, poorer countries
Imperialism started off as the English needing ports to restock their ships, but soon the English began to become selfish so they started taking over the land. Soon other countries got involved, and Africa ended up being controlled by over five European countries.
Imperial Motives
It is know that Imperialists had at least five motives.
1) Political - motives were based on a nation's desire to gain power, and to expand territory.
2) Ideological - motives were based on cultural values such as the belief that the white race is superior, other cultures were not.
3) Religious - motives were based on the desire to spread Christianity, to spread European values and moral beliefs, and to educate people, to end slavery.
4) Exploratory - motives were based on the desire to seek out the unknown lands and cultures.
5) Economic - motives were based on the desire to make money.
There will be five photos, and in the survey you will need to answer the Imperial motives for each photo.
