The Holocaust
The holocaust was the mass murder of some 6 million European Jews by the German Nazi regime during the Second World War. Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, Jews were an inferior race an alien threat to German racial purity and community. After years of Nazi rule in Germany, during which Jews were consistently persecuted, Hitler’s “final solution” (now known as the Holocaust) came to control under the cover of world war, with mass killing centers constructed in the concentration camps of occupied Poland.
American Women during the War
During World War II some 350,000 women served in the U.S. Armed Forces both at home and abroad. They included the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots, who on March 10, 2010, were awarded the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal. Between 1940 and 1945, the female percentage of the U.S. workforce increased from 27 percent to nearly 37 percent, and by 1945 nearly one out of every four married women worked outside the home.

Battle of Britain
German and British air forces clashed in the skies over the United Kingdom, locked in the largest sustained bombing campaign to that date. A significant turning point of World War II, the Battle of Britain ended when Germany’s Luftwaffe failed to gain air superiority over the Royal Air Force despite months of targeting Britain’s air bases, military posts and, ultimately, its civilian population. Britain’s decisive victory saved the country from a ground invasion and possible occupation by German forces while proving that air power alone could be used to win a major battle.

The Battle of Stalingrad was the successful Soviet defense of the city of Stalingrad U.S.S.R. during World War II. It stopped the German advance into the Soviet Union and marked the turning of the tide of war in favor of the Allies. The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the bloodiest battles in history.

D-Day
|
Operation Overlord also known as D-Day had some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches of France’s Normandy region. The Allies conducted a large-scale campaign designed to mislead the Germans about the intended invasion target. The Normandy landings have been called the beginning of the end of war in Europe.

Battle of Coral Sea

World War II marked the first air-sea battle in history. The Japanese were seeking to control the Coral Sea with an invasion of Port Moresby in southeast New Guinea, but their plans were intercepted by Allied forces. Battled resulted in an Allied victory.

Battle of Midway
United States defeated Japan in one of the most decisive naval battles of World War II. Thanks in part to major advances in code breaking, the United States was able to preempt and counter Japan’s planned ambush of its few remaining aircraft carriers, inflicting permanent damage on the Japanese Navy. An important turning point in the Pacific campaign, the victory allowed the United States and its allies to move into an offensive position.
